Fallout Tactics Redux is a comprehensive revision and enhancement of the original game's single player campaign. The original game was plagued by poor design as well as lack of playtesting, and shipped with pervasive bugs that have long tarnished Fallout Tactics with a reputation as a game of questionable craftsmanship. My mod seeks to change all that, offering a quality fun experience to players interested in Fallout universe games as well as players with a general interest in games of the military science fiction genre. Hundreds of bugs in the original game have been fixed, major sources of annoyance (as determined by a general consensus of players over the years) have been removed or minimized, and lots of new content has been added to make the game more entertaining. FOT Redux also features a fundamental redesign of the game's weaponry and recruits in an effort to cultivate more of the sorts of experiences players look for in a squad-based tactical combat game. The mod is optimized for turn-based combat play, but has been thoroughly tested in real-time mode as well, and supports numerous styles of play.
The mod comes in an easy to use 7zip file-- just unzip the download into your FOT game directory and have at it. However, since FOT Redux makes numerous changes to the original game files I do recommend making an alternate copy of your current game installation and installing FOT Redux there; that way you won't have to uninstall the whole game if it turns out you want to revert back to what you had before. Those who use the Steam version of the game should consult their Steam documentation and vendor support forum for information on installing the mod-- basically, if using Steam you need to turn off any effort of theirs to synchronize your files with their versions, otherwise Steam will erase the mod when they periodically update your files to match their own versions. I don't use their service myself, so I'm not clear on all the details.
FOT Redux was first released about four years ago and since then has been played by thousands of people. As a mature mod in a stable state of development, these days I rarely entertain suggestions regarding the basic design features of the mod, and the truth is most of the bugs in the original game that can be fixed by end-users are at this point fixed by the mod. The mod also comes with extensive documentation which discusses all the common questions and feature requests raised by players over the years. All that aside, I welcome comments and bug reports from players. If you do find a problem with the mod, please be very specific is discussing your issue so I can look into the matter; screenshots are also quite helpful. Over the years I've been able to significantly improve Fallout Tactics Redux based directly on all the thoughtful player feedback I've received in other venues, and I hope to continue doing so in the future.
For example, comments like 'I don't like the weapons system' are useless because myself and most players are happy with all that and I'm not going to change anything there, but on the other hand a comment like 'The Razorback rifle has a range of 30, but this should be decreased to range 25 in order to better distinguish it from the Q82 rifle' can be helpful. Worse than useless are comments like 'I only want something that fixes bugs, get rid of that other stuff you changed.' FOT Redux is unabashedly an extensive modification of the original game-- if you don't like exploring mods, I frankly discourage you from exploring Fallout Tactics Redux. Finally, there are still a few curmudgeons around who despise the original game, and take some deranged offense at the very notion my mod is generating new interest in FOT after all these years. To these I say: go make your own sourpuss discussion down at the troll clubhouse. There is no legitimate reason whatsoever for those who feel that way to interfere with folks attempting to have a good time here discussing something we enjoy.
At the end of the day, the objective of this mod is to provide a fun alternative experience for fans of the game who are still playing sixteen years later. If there's something you always wanted to see in the game, by all means tell me about it. Maybe your ideas will be plausible and maybe not, but you'll never know until you ask. Please check out my documentation first, though-- numerous topics are already covered therein.
For those who have previously played Fallout Tactics Redux, version 1.3 is a minor update compared to version 1.2 (August 2015), and is as compatible with previously saved games as the game engine allows. In other words, you won't see updated content in maps you already visited since their state is already stored in your savegame from the older version, but going forward you will enjoy all other benefits of this latest version. If you're already far along in a Redux 1.2 game, you can take a look at the changelog (in the mod's documentation) and decide for yourself whether you want to restart your current game-- the point is, I recommend a restart but you don't have to do so. FOT Redux 1.3 is not compatible with savegames from older versions such as Redux 1.1 (June 2012) or 1.0 (April 2012), since I've made too many major changes to core game files since then, and starting a brand-new playthrough is required in that case. Nor is the mod compatible with any savegames from the original Microforte version of the game.
Fallout Tactics is an old game, made to run on Windows 98. On modern operating systems, one of the most common complaints of players is that the game sometimes exhibits a random CTD (abrupt crash to desktop). Such crashes are much rarer while playing FOT Redux compared to the original game, but they do happen from time to time and since they are purely random nothing much can be done about them. My top suggestion for those who experience CTDs while playing is to use the in-game options panel to turn off the Miles Sound System, and instead choose DirectX. In my experience, almost every single CTD remaining after my various other fixes is related to the game's use (or misuse) of an antiquated version of Miles (mss32.dll), so turning it off should fix most such problems for most contemporary end-users.
Some end-users experience engine slowdowns or graphical hiccups during play. In all cases, this is 100 percent attributable to problems on the end-user's own computer (everything works fine for me as well as the overwhelming majority of other players), and is caused by an incompability with the game itself on the end-user's system or a failed game installation rather than any issues in my mod. Assuming you don't have actual faulty hardware on your computer (bad memory, failing hard drive, etc), if you experience slowdowns then my top suggestions to address such problems are:
--Your system hasn't allocated sufficient file permissions to the game's executable file, bos.exe. Set bos.exe to have administrator or equivalent privileges. Based on player feedback, this is the number one cause of in-game slowdowns while playing FOT.
--If playing in turn-based combat mode, using the in-game options set 'Fast Turn Based' to 'on.'
--Using the in-game options, turn off 'Anti-aliased Tiles' and 'Anti-aliased Characters.'
--If playing the game in a window (using add-on software), try playing in full-screen mode instead. If using a high-resolution mod, try not using a high-resolution mod.
--If you currently start the game by running a file called 'FalloutTacticsLauncher.exe' then make a new shortcut and instead start the game directly by running bos.exe. The sole purpose of FalloutTacticsLauncher.exe is to check if you've registered your game with Interplay (which is no longer in business) in order to receive 'exciting email offers' from them, so there's no reason at all to have such a process running while you play.
--Try increasing your virtual memory allocation. On the other hand if your virtual memory allocation is already well into the gigabytes and you have lots of RAM (as pretty much every computer does these days), try significantly decreasing your virtual memory allocation to something small like 256 MB or 512 MB.
--Don't install the game into Windows 'security zones' (Documents and Settings, Program Files, etc). Installing any game, not just FOT, in such areas is a bad idea in general as automated Windows processes will degrade performance as well as increase the likelihood of strange problems that cannot be duplicated by other end-users.
--Try reinstalling the game and the mod. Install to a different location than wherever you installed before. If you have multiple hard drives or multiple partitions on a hard drive, install to a completely different drive letter than you installed before.
--When you're playing the game, play the game. Don't have five or ten other programs running at the same time while using FOT.

Enjoy.
