Significantly different from 1977’s Song Bird, When Love Comes Calling followed Deniece Williams’ success with Johnny Mathis on the number one Hot 100 single “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” and subsequent album That’s What Friends Are For. Williams signed to Maurice White’s Columbia-affiliated ARC label, but White was otherwise all but absent compared to his level…

Most Al Green albums work their way over time into you; this one uncharacteristically reaches out and shakes you up, an odd result when one goes largely acoustic and goes for more or less the same quiet grooves that one had pursued for most of…

Shuggie Otis - 1971 – Freedom Flight
AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek 1971’s Freedom Flight is perhaps, in its own way, every bit as adventurous and regal as Shuggie Otis’ masterpiece, Inspiration Information. Produced by Shuggie’s father, R&B legend Johnny Otis, the album features seven stellar, genre bending cuts, most of which were written…
Read More/Download ›Margie Joseph – 1971 – Phase II
Amazingly, Margie’s second and last LP for Stax failed to chart. For my money, as brilliant as ‘Margie Joseph Makes a New Impression‘ is – and brilliant IT IS – ‘Phase II’ actually surpasses its predecessor in coming up with beautifully orchestrated soul gems that…

A rare pearl coming from Mexico, formed in the early 70s in the capital Mexico City. The “Grupo Oz” has released only one album in 1972, with little copies, making the group end in the same year. An interesting mixing of styles, from funk rock,…

Sublime work from The Manhattans – who are on top of the world at this point! The group’s harmonies are excellent, a bit rough in the best parts – ala Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes during the Teddy Pendergrass years – but also capable…

While jazz is deniably important, it’s not always accessible for everyone, but Harris welcomes the listener this outing, never too extravagant but never boring, always as much about the song as the solo, this teaches us not only about music, but about art and life…

Kiah Victoria – Look Up EP
Genre: indie, pop, r&b, soul
From her Facebook page: “Hello, my name is Kiah Victoria and I was born in Berlin, Germany. I only lived there for a hot minute before my family relocated to New York City. Then 1996 rolled around I moved to Nairobi, Kenya with my sister and mother but we quickly wound up back in New York. Shortly after returning to the city, the fam made a semi-final move to the rolling hills of PG County (Woot woot!). But fate brought me back to boroughs when I landed a starring role as Young Nala in Disney’s production of The Lion King on Broadway when I was 10 years old. Probably the most magical 6 months of my life… I spent my high school days at Bowie High School (GOODMORNTING!) performing in every musical, choir, play, and concert that I could get myself involved in. I reside in lower Manhattan where I study at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music in NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Still performing, writing, and TWERKING my way to the top. BOOM.”

Amy Lynn & The Gunshow – Clearly
Genre: rock, soul, r&b
From their homepage: “The vocal gymnastics Amy Lynn Zanetto can pull off in a mini-dress and stilettos would have Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Mariah Carey on their feet by curtain call. As each of these women has done before her, Amy Lynn brings her own unique flair to the diva tradition, adding a quirky, down-to-earth humor to her front woman role that lands Amy Lynn and Gunshow in a league of their own. The Gunshow, lead by lovebirds, Amy & Alex, has a 60’s pop and soul sound marked by powerhouse singers and infectious horn licks as especially fertile ground on which to showcase their combined talents. Together and apart they have played all around the world gracing the stage with Duffy, St. Vincent, Lucy Woodward, Yo La Tengo, Spoon, The Radio City Orchestra and many more.”
